10th February 2015
Lose weight! Drink less alcohol! Get fit! We start every January full of Resolutions to improve ourselves, but we sometimes forget that one of the most important things to work on is the relationship with our partner.
The good news is that often the simplest things can make a big difference and Relate Counsellor, Priscilla Sims, has come up with some easy resolutions you can make to improve your relationship in 2015.
1. Date night
Make time for a date night once a week – try to park any issues you may have between you and do something you can enjoy together. And make it just about the two of you - no kids, friends or family.
2. Love notes
Take a minute or two out of your day to send your partner a text or email letting them know you are thinking of them. It doesn’t have to be profound: just a few loving words can make the world of difference to their day.
3. Regular check-ups
Regularly ask each other how you are doing and feeling. It doesn't have to be a massive occasion; just sit down together for a couple of minutes once a week, to make sure you're both ok. This helps to keep you connected and on the same page with each other, and also prevents any resentments of misunderstandings from building up.
4. Stop the blame game
Blaming your partner or yourself rarely helps a situation – it builds up resentment, creates retaliation and destroys self esteem. Instead think about how things could have been handled differently, and how a better outcome achieved.
5. Seek help
You may feel you have gone beyond the stage where these tips would help. Maybe you have been arguing too much and know that things cannot stay as they are. Maybe you don't feel the same way about your partner any longer and need to re-evaluate where things are going. Consider contacting a specially trained Relate counsellor for support and help in making the best decisions for the future.
